Nestled along the banks of the Ohio River, Louisville, Kentucky, transforms into a scene of vibrant festivities, elegant hats, and the thunderous applause of horse racing fans each year as it hosts the legendary Kentucky Derby. But this year wasn't just any Derby—it was the 150th anniversary! And trust me, there’s nowhere else in the world you'd rather be than Louisville during Derby Week. I was fortunate to be there during the week leading up to the Derby, and I could feel the palpable energy in the air, heightened by the anticipation of the 150th anniversary of this legendary event. I loved delving into the heart of Louisville, soaking in its rich history and vibrant culture.

My journey began with a visit to Churchill Downs and a private tour of the grounds. Taking this tour just days before the Kentucky Derby really made watching this year’s spectacular event even more special and memorable. A stroll through Louisville's historic downtown district, where charming cobblestone streets and Victorian-era architecture whisked me back in time. The city's vibrant arts scene was on full display as I wandered through the eclectic galleries and boutiques, each one offering a unique glimpse into Louisville's creative spirit.

Bardstown Bourbon Tasting Room

For a taste of local flavor, I couldn't resist indulging in some authentic Kentucky cuisine. From savory hot browns to mouthwatering bourbon-glazed ribs, every dish was a culinary delight. And of course, no visit to Louisville would be complete without sampling some of the finest bourbon the region has to offer. I enjoyed tasting a variety of Bourbon samples. As a self-proclaimed non-Bourbon drinker, I was amazed that I actually liked a few, and I really enjoyed learning about the time-honored craft of bourbon making.

Derby Week is packed with gatherings, parties, and races, ensuring every day is as thrilling as the last. Here’s a hit list of must-do Derby week activities:
